Overweight

Excess weight is an especially important risk factor when it comes to the abdominal area, known as visceral fat. This is because fat in this region secretes inflammatory hormones that increase a person’s risk of developing GERD complications. they tend to have other conditions that increase their risk of GERD, include

• Higher rates of esophageal motility disorders

• Increased pressure in the abdomen

• Increase the capacity of the stomach

• Some larger functional problems in the esophageal sphincter, a ring of muscle that closes to prevent stomach contents from backing up into the esophagus since there is excess weight.

Research links obesity to GERD and its complications, including Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer. Study results showed symptoms improved in 81% of participants and resolved in 65% of them

Underweight

When GERD becomes chronic, weight loss can occur as a result of complications related to eating and cravings. Being underweight can also be harmful to health and carries a higher risk of death, especially with age.

Another study found that being underweight can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, which affects the heart and blood vessels.

People can reduce their health risks from not being enough weight if they gain enough weight to put them in the healthy body mass index (BMI) range. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9.

Alcohol

Alcohol further relaxes the valve between the stomach and the food pipe, and it stimulates the stomach to secrete more acid

Carbonated beverages

The bubbles in carbonated drinks expand in the stomach. This puts pressure on the sphincter and can push stomach acid and stomach contents back into the food pipe.

Caffeinated beverages

Coffee, tea, and soda contain caffeine, and this chemical aggravates acid reflux. Switching to decaffeinated versions of these beverages may help minimize symptoms.

Chocolate.

Chocolate contains both caffeine and cocoa, both of which increase the symptoms of acid reflux. Therefore, hot cocoa or chocolate milk can act as a stimulant.

Citrus juices
